soundscape composition
This soundscape composition is the documentation of my walk in Byward Market on a Sunday afternoon in late October. It was my first return to this busy area in 2 years, and it has a drastically different vibe from what I remembered 2 years ago. Through this composition, I hope to paint an auditory picture of Byward Market on a busy Sunday afternoon, full of energy, joy and excitement.
I visited Byward Market a lot when I lived in Sandy Hill back in the summer of 2020. It was a time of isolation and loneliness, and I often found myself walking in the Market looking for signs of social life. The Market was slightly livelier than other places in Ottawa with people occasionally wandering around, but overall, it was covered in silence, as if it was deep in a hibernation.
I moved away from Sandy Hill shortly after that, and ever since, a lot has happened that took me away from Byward Market. I got carried away by school, the whole city underwent a few lockdowns, and the freedom convoy made the whole downtown area inaccessible.
When I revisited Byward Market this time, it was much more lively and energized. I tuned into the sounds of chattering, laughter, music, businesses, and so on, and they made me feel like the Market is back! As if the pandemic never happened.
I hope you enjoy my soundscape composition.
photo #1: texture
This pumpkin is part of a Halloween set up. It is a popular photogenic spot for visitors to the Market. In this photo, you can see textures on the pumpkin as well as the bed of dry straws around it.

photo #2: leading lines
This photo was taken on Dalhousie St. The lines made by the sidewalks, the bike lanes, and the stores capture the viewers' eyes and lead then to the end of the street.

photo #3: symmetry
This shop's front face is perfectly symmetrical. It is a style of architecture very common at Byward Market.
